“I like . . . play today!” Josiah exclaims.

Josiah is a ten-year-old boy who loves to play! Whether he’s swinging at the playground, flying kites in the meadow, or splashing around at the waterpark, Josiah finds the fun in every day. Sometimes, other kids don’t understand that he plays a little differently than they do. But with kindness and an open heart, Josiah shows his new friends how they can all play together.

With reflection questions and inviting illustrations, Josiah Loves to Play is an exploration of accepting others’ differences. Writing from her published research and her personal experience as a mother to a neurodivergent son, author Camille Bryant hopes to encourage readers of all ages to become more empathic and more compassionate so that, together, they can create a kinder world for everyone.

About the Author:

Camille Bryant is a devoted mother and educator. Her passion for education was first ignited during her time with AmeriCorps VISTA, where she led an after-school program for refugees. This passion then led Camille to become an elementary school teacher. During her time in the classroom, Camille was able to see firsthand the impact of social and emotional learning on the well-being and overall happiness of children. Her experiences ultimately motivated her to pursue a PhD in educational research at the University of Virginia.

As the mother of a neurodivergent child, Camille has observed the importance of fostering empathy and compassion in children’s interactions. Camille’s commitment to motherhood and to education converge in Josiah Loves to Play. Through her book, she aims to inspire both parents and children to engage in open dialogue about these values, emphasizing the need for understanding and kindness toward all children who seek to play, explore, and connect with the world around them.
