Brittany Feria is a senior program manager at Amazon and now a children’s book author! She got her bachelor’s in accounting from Michigan Technological University and her MBA from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She lives in Wisconsin with her husband, their two small children, and their dog, Loki. In her free time, she enjoys hiking, building sandcastles at the beach, and reading. She was inspired to write Sammy Goes to the Doctor to show her son what to expect at the doctor. Sammy is based on her goldendoodle who was her son’s best friend prior to passing away from cancer.

Q: What inspired the idea behind your book?

A: I wanted to get a book for my son about what to expect when you go to the doctor. After looking around some bookstores, I couldn’t find any, so I decided to write my own.

Q: As an author, what tips would you give anyone who wants to get into writing?

A: Just do it! It seems scary at first, but you have to start somewhere.

Q: What is your favorite book?

A: My favorite children’s book is The Pigeon Needs a Bath! by Mo Willems. My favorite adult book is The Power of Habit by Charles Duhigg.

Q: Was your main character modeled after anyone in your life?

A: The main character is based on my three-year-old son, Grayson.

Q: What is your favorite part of the writing process?

A: My favorite part was seeing the illustrations! They were better than I envisioned.

Q: Do you believe that being a “good writer” is a developed skill or a natural talent?

A: I think storytelling is a natural talent, but being a good writer is something you have to develop.

Q: Would you write another book (or are you already writing another book)?

A: Yes, absolutely! I already have another story started.

Q: Is there an author you look up to, and why?

A: There are too many authors to mention who I find very talented.

Q: If there were an apocalypse and you could only take five books into your doomsday bunker, what would they be?

A: Freakonomics by Steven D. Levitt and Stephen J. Dubner, a couple of Abby Jimenez books, and a couple of Colleen Hoover books.
